First off, don't trade off the Savage for a sportster. As an ex-multi HD owner, I'm speaking from experience. I'm 6'2", close to 235 pounds, and the baby harley felt worse size wise than the baby suzi.
As for increasing your comfort on the bike, if it is legal where you are, add apehangers and extended length hoses/wiring. 16" is near perfect for me, although illegal here in Tennessee. Also, if you cut the seat down a bit, it changes the angle of your legs, actually making them less cramped. Ideally, you want to stretch the frame, in conjunction with the aforementioned modifications. That is the only way to truly increase you stretching out room. Word of warning, none of these options are cheap, and the seat/frame mods are condiered irreversible.
